In our stock investing software, investment strategies consist of:
- A set of rules for building a list of qualifying stocks from a universe of stocks;
- A ranking system for constructing a portfolio from those stocks that qualify;
- A set of buy/sell rules;
- A method for allocating cash; and
- A set of simulation assumptions (e.g., commissions, slippage, rebalancing method and its frequency, etc.).
With over 1,400 Fundamental and Technical parameters from which to choose, building a set of rules for your strategy couldn't be easier. Bloodhound provides detailed definitions for each parameter and categorizes them by logical groupings. In addition, Bloodhound provides a predefined set of test conditions and a range of test values appropriate to each parameter. Unlike other investment systems, Bloodhound does not limit your choices to only a few parameters, nor will it let you create nonsensical rules based on those parameters. With Bloodhound you can use as many or as few parameters as you wish to define the rules of your investment strategy. With Bloodhound you can truly build investment strategies of your own design and be assured that they are logical in their construction.
Professional fund managers select stocks based on Fundamental analysis and time their purchase decisions based on Technical analysis. Uniquely, our software gives you that same capability.
Bloodhound includes over 1,400 Fundamental and Technical parameters from which you can choose to build the rules of your investment strategy. By incorporating performance ratios and financial statement data into your strategy, you're able to uncover companies with valuable assets, a strong balance sheet, stable earnings, or staying power. Some of the most legendary investors think long-term and value. Graham and Dodd, Warren Buffett and John Neff are seen as the champions of value investing.
Adding Technical parameters to your strategy can help with timing a proper entry point. It's no secret that timing can play an important role in overall performance. Bloodhound provides over 180 technical indicators to help spot appropriate entry points. Simply waiting for those opportunities can improve your returns.
In Bloodhound, there are over 1,400 parameters from which you can choose to build the rules of your investment strategy. They include a wealth of performance ratios, financial statements and industry data, as well as over 180 technical indicators. But if you don't see the one you need, you can probably create it using our powerful Custom Function Editor.
Based on the widely adopted Metastock model, Bloodhound's Custom Function Editor is easy to use and full featured. It can do all of the things that the standard software interface can do with several important additions, including: 1) the ability to create conditions with more than one indicator on each side of the Comparison Operator, and 2) the ability to create functions that join different conditions together with "OR" logic. In addition, it enables you to apply a full range of time, logical and mathematical operators to any of the 1,400 Fundamental and Technical parameters available in the system. Commonly used custom functions are included in a Popular library; others that you develop remain private to you.
Model Strategies represent a quick-start to your use of the system. Occasionally, while exploring our research database we find investment strategies that we feel will be of interest to all Bloodhound users. When we do that, we add those strategies to the Model library, where they can be copied into your personal library and later modified if you think you can improve upon them. They can also be used to create and manage a portfolio or to assess stocks of interest.
Bloodhound maintains 3 investing strategy libraries:
- Model, which are provided by us and accessible to all users;
- Private, which contains only those that you have developed or copied from the Model library; and
- Search, which contains the most recent strategies found as a result of having searched our 1 million investment strategy research database.
The latter library enables you to quickly compare strategies that meet your search requirements
Over the years, many professional investors have publicized their stock market investment approaches and have exposed the stock screens they use to find undervalued stocks or stocks that are poised for rapid price appreciation. Some of those stock screens have a history of working well, others do not. When we find publicized stock screens that consistently work well, we add them to our Popular library. They're pre-coded and can be used "as is" or modified, if you think you can improve upon them.
Bloodhound provides seven performance reports; each designed to add to your overall understanding of your investment strategy's historical performance. They include:
- A summary performance report,
- A reporting period performance report,
- A portfolio holdings report,
- A trading statistics report,
- A sector weighting report,
- A chart that plots the strategy’s historical return over various investment horizons for each of five probability levels ranging from 50% to 95%,
- A chart that plots risk and return compared to a selected index over various investment horizons.
Each of these latter two charts is designed to answer the question: "how would my strategy perform over that period of time during which I intend to remain invested in the strategy?" No other investment system provides such reporting.
Bloodhound uses a code to describe each of its investment strategies. Uniquely, it uses that encoding scheme to maintain a library of over 1,000,000 investment strategies and uses supercomputing technologies to update them regularly. This creates a database of results that can be searched, enabling you to find those investment strategies that meet your requirements in terms of return on investment, risk, or other criteria you specify. The construction of many of its strategies will likely surprise you, as there are many ways to invest, most of us know of only a few! If you don't know how to build a long-term stock market investment strategy, start with our research database. Find a strategy you like and then see if you can improve upon it.
Bloodhound is all about answering the question: "what if?"
Bloodhound's unique approach to stock market investment and management enables you to create meaningful, risk-spreading portfolios that are systematic, impartial and understandable in the context of an investment strategy that you have selected.
Bloodhound's model portfolios follow your stock investing strategy exactly. For example, if you were to select an investment strategy from the Model library, you could create a model portfolio from it with just a few clicks. The stocks Bloodhound would put into the portfolio would be those stocks that the strategy was holding as of today. Thereafter, Bloodhound will keep the portfolio aligned with the strategy via daily buy/sell recommendations. And, it will do it indefinitely. Stock market investing couldn't be any easier.
In the "real" world, model portfolios are a rarity. Most of us have built our stock portfolios over time and they typically contain stocks that were acquired for many different reasons and often out of context of an investment strategy. Bloodhound refers to those portfolios as "legacy" portfolios. Why, because Bloodhound "inherits" them.
Uniquely, Bloodhound can manage your legacy portfolio as easily as it does a Model portfolio, no other software system can do that.
Bloodhound's Portfolio Analysis tool keeps you on top of your portfolio's performance and allows you to manage it in accordance with your chosen long-term investment strategy. This latter capability is unique to Bloodhound and is its most powerful feature.
Bloodhound's Portfolio Analysis tool provides a wealth of analytical reports each designed to help you become a confident, disciplined investor. It can:
- Assess your stock portfolio's strategic fit against one or more strategies and can even recommend stock trades that will keep your portfolio in alignment with your strategy.
- Maintain a daily accounting of your portfolio and can report on its current status.
- Tell you which of your stocks are consistent with your strategy.
- Tell you if each stock's relative ranking within the strategy’s candidate pool is either improving or deteriorating.
- Tell you which stocks to buy and in what amount and which stocks to sell and in what amount if you sense the need to rebalance your portfolio.
- Analyze your portfolio to determine its sector weightings, an important measure of risk.
Bloodhound represents a breakthrough approach to the construction and management of stock portfolios based on point-in-time tested, long-term investment strategies. Key to its uniqueness is its ability to assess the strategic fit of a portfolio’s holdings to one or more strategies and then recommend the trades needed to bring the portfolio into alignment with the strategy.
Investing in accordance with a time tested investment strategy brings several distinct advantages over traditional investing:
- Low Turnover: Since most of Bloodhound's strategies are based on fundamental and technical parameters, stock rankings don't vary much from week-to-week.
- Easy-to-Follow: Bloodhound’s strategies are systematic, impartial, understandable and supportable.
- Diversification: Bloodhound’s portfolios tend to be well diversified, thereby reducing sector concentration risk.
- Mechanical, Consistent Approach: We, along with academics and their professional counterparts, strongly believe that this is one of the keys to successful investing. Completely analytical, Bloodhound uses no subjective judgment, never sleeps, and faithfully implements your instructions.
- Reduced Costs: By using a discount broker, you can easily implement a Bloodhound managed portfolio and still pay less in fees than the average 1.5% fee of a mutual fund.
- Performance: We believe that a systematic, unemotional and diversified investment approach very rarely will do worse than the market. Moreover, by using Bloodhound you will always be invested in those stocks most aligned with your strategy. This can result in superior returns.
- Size: Research has shown that for portfolios of greater than 50 positions, as in most mutual funds, returns generally equal that of the market. Our research has shown that a point-in-time tested, long-term investment strategy implemented in portfolio sizes of 10, 20 or 50 stocks can easily outperform the market as well as most mutual funds.
Bloodhound includes portfolio rebalancing, however, it is optional. Bloodhound’s Portfolio Analysis tool enables you to rebalance your portfolio whenever you choose to do so. Portfolios can be rebalanced in accordance with any one of two methods: equal shares or equal capital. You can also include automatic portfolio rebalancing as part of an investment strategy. When included as part of an investment strategy, you can specify its frequency along with your preferred method. Although optional, you are strongly advised to experiment with various rebalancing frequencies and methods to see how rebalancing can help you attain your goals.
Bloodhound updates your investment strategies and monitors the performance of your stock portfolios daily.
Because Bloodhound never sleeps and because it reviews all of the Fundamental and Technical information available to it daily; and because it applies it to every strategy and every portfolio you own, negative surprises are virtually eliminated. Bloodhound's daily buy/sell recommendations make managing a portfolio easy.
To keep your portfolio in alignment with your long-term investment strategy, Bloodhound provides daily buy/sell recommendations.
Each day, Bloodhound updates your investment strategies and monitors the performance of your stock portfolios and suggests changes in holdings. You're told what to buy and in what amount and what to sell and in what amount. And since Bloodhound always follows the rules of your strategy, you can rest assured that your portfolios will always remain aligned with your strategies.
Most stock screening software is deficient in one important area, that is, the screen is run when you create it. To know if your screen finds stocks that grow in value or not, you have to wait for time to go by, but not with Bloodhound's Stock Screener.
Bloodhound's Stock Screener lets you run your stock screen as of any date you choose. It also lets you specify dates over which to run its analysis. That way, you can easily determine if your stock screen works well in a down market or an up market or a flat market. This capability alleviates the risk of not knowing if your screening criteria are appropriate to only a single market condition. In addition, Bloodhound's Stock Screener gives you access to all the capabilities of its investment strategy creation tool, which includes over 1,400 filters, both Fundamental and Technical.
If you've found a stock screen that works well for you, you can incorporate it into your investment strategy. However, you need to be careful. By their nature, stock screeners are designed to follow a strict set of criteria that produce a short list of stocks that display all of those attributes. But, when building a long-term investment strategy, it's important to use a set of filters that work well across a broad range of stock market conditions. You also want the stock screener to find baskets of stocks large enough to support the creation of well-diversified portfolios. It's an important distinction.
Over the years, may professional investors have publicized their stock market investment approaches and have exposed the stock screens they use to find undervalued stocks or stocks that are poised for rapid price appreciation. Some of those stock screens have a history of working well, while others do not. When we find publicized stock screens that consistently work well, we add them to our Popular library. They're pre-built and can be used "as is" or modified, if you think you can improve upon them.
Bloodhound supports the technical analysis of individual stocks with its advanced Stock Charting Tool.

Your charts can contain up to six studies and can be built from over 180 Overlays/ Technical Indicators that we provide. Once defined, your charts can be quickly applied to stocks of interest with only a couple of clicks.
Bloodhound's advanced Stock Charting tool includes a growing number of reference charts common to most premium Stock Charting tools.
Our gallery of popular charts gives you access to the most common chart layouts used by historical stock chartists. In addition, we provide some of the best market indicator charts available. We also do the work to give you market indicators for each of the major sub-markets like the S&P 500 and the Russell 2000. Want more? Our Stock Charting tool includes an editor for the creation of custom charts and a Custom Function Editor for the creation of custom indicators. Bloodhound has you covered.
Fundamental analysis is the examination of the underlying forces that affect the well being of the economy, industry groups, and companies. As with most analyses, the goal is to identify undervalued investment opportunities. Bloodhound software supports this analytical process at the company level by providing detailed financial data on the companies in its database.
Our extensive database includes 25 years of quarterly and annual financial statements. We include a key statistics summary page, income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements, each pre-formatted in an industry standard format for ease of comparability. In addition, we provide common size statements and multiple levels of variance analysis to aid your analysis.
Technical analysis can help you anticipate what is "likely" to happen to prices over time. Bloodhound's advanced Stock Charting tool supports the top-down approach used by many technical analysts that begins with broad-based macro analysis. The larger parts are then broken down to an analysis of individual stocks. Such an analysis involves three steps:
- Broad market analysis through the major indices such as the S&P 500, Dow Industrials, NASDAQ and NYSE Composite.
- Sector analysis to identify the strongest and weakest groups within the broader market.
- Individual stock analysis to identify the strongest and weakest stocks within select groups.
The beauty of technical analysis lies in its versatility. Because the principles of technical analysis are universally applicable, each of the analysis steps above can be performed using the same charts. However, technical analysis is by no means easy. Success requires serious study and dedication.
To support investing technicians, Bloodhound's advanced Stock Charting Tool provides over 180 Overlays/Technical indicators including the popular Chaikin Money Flow indicator. One of our higher priced competitors has built a business around this indicator. When the indicator is above zero, buying pressure is dominant. Selling pressure is dominant when it is below zero. They've made it simple to understand with the addition of a red light to indicate selling pressure and a green light to indicate buying pressure. But, why pay over a thousand dollars a year for such a narrow capability? Bloodhound offers that and much, much more!
Do you use watch lists? Where did the stocks come from, your brother-in-law, the newspaper, television? Why are you watching them, do they fit your strategy? How do you know? Bloodhound's Watch List tool can tell you.
Once created, Bloodhound can measure the strategic fit for each stock in your watch list. Each day it shows you the ranking position each stock holds in the strategy's candidate pool. For comparative purposes, it also shows you the stocks the system thinks you ought to be watching. No other stock investment tool can do that!
Required ROI Determination
Want to know the rate of return you need on your investment capital in order for you to reach your financial goals and your chosen lifestyle?
Bloodhound's LifePlan™ can calculate that number for you. It's an important number. With it, you can search for long-term stock investment strategies that have historically generated a matching return. Once funded, your investment strategy will assist you in ensuring that your investment capital will never go below the minimum that you specify, while providing enough income for you to meet the requirements of your lifestyle.
Multiple Scenarios
LifePlan™ is all about "what if?"
When you retire, the lifestyles you adopt will in large part be determined by how big a nest egg you accumulate prior to retirement. A key consideration will be the amount of money you expect to salt away each year. Another will be the foundation upon which you intend to build your future nest egg ... the investments you've accumulated to date.
Consider two points. A modest increase in the amount of money you set aside each year for investment could have a big effect on your savings. Give careful consideration, too, to the rate-of-return you expect on your investments. Finally, give careful consideration to your projected retirement age. You'll spend a number of years building up your financial assets and another number of years spending them down. The point at which you shift from accumulating to spending makes all the difference in whether or not you'll be able to afford the lifestyle you want. Test various scenarios. You'll be surprised how easy it is with LifePlan™.
Sensitivity Analysis
Experience often demonstrates that "the plan is the one thing that won't happen," neither will yours!
Plans get disrupted because of incomplete information or changes in circumstances. Bloodhound can calculate the rate of return needed to make your financial plan work, but changes in your assumptions can have a non-linear effect on the return needed thereby negating the relevancy of the calculated return. In order to demonstrate this effect, LifePlan includes a sensitivity tool that tests the effect of an early retirement or of changes in planned expenses by up to 15%, up or down.
After-Tax Calculations
Federal, state and local taxes can have a significant impact on your ability to create a workable lifetime financial plan, so we include them.
As a proxy for future income tax rates, LifePlan™ calculates your income taxes based on the default tax rates we automatically attached to your plan. However, the tax rates can easily be modified by you as changes are made to local, state, or national tax codes.
Cash Flow Analysis
For each year of your plan, in an easy to read spreadsheet, Bloodhound details the results of your lifetime financial plan by showing its cash inflows and outflows.
If your plan falls short of meeting its minimum capital requirements, LifePlan™ will warn you. Among other things, LifePlan™ details additions to and removals from your investment capital accounts and details the net equity you can expect to accumulate in your non-earning assets (e.g., real estate, automobiles, boats, etc.), an important source of additional capital, should you need it. With LifePlan™ the performance details of your plan are fully disclosed and to make your plan as realistic as possible, they're calculated on an after-tax basis.
Multiple Asset Classes
To reduce risk, investors are often advised to invest in multiple asset classes like bonds, equities, or real estate. Reflecting the role each can play in your financial plan, LifePlan™ accommodates them.
Your investments can be tagged as being either tax-deferred or not. If tax-deferred, withdrawals can be annuitized over a term and start date that you specify. LifePlan™ also allows you to specify the taxable accounts to which additions or withdrawals are to be made; this allows you to accumulate surplus income in the form of additional investment capital, and to withdraw capital when your income falls short of your expenses, subject to a minimum capital balance that you specify.
Unlimited Assumptions
Bloodhound's lifetime financial planning tool, LifePlan™, enables you to include an almost unlimited number of assumptions.
With only a few clicks, you can easily build a long-term financial plan that not only covers retirement but every aspect of your life. Your plan can be as granular as you like. Include every budget detail or start with summary data to get a sense of it. Either way, LifePlan will prompt you for a minimum set of data necessary to build a meaningful financial plan. You'll be prompted for sources of income, recurring expenses, major purchases (e.g., real estate, automobiles, boats, college educations, etc.), sources of investment capital including tax deferred investment accounts and other information necessary to complete your plan. With LifePlan's east-to-use interface, assumptions can be easily updated as your circumstances change.
